BFA Education & Training at Roger Williams University

01

Creative Writing BFA Recipient

I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Magna Cum Laude in Creative Writing in May of 2019. With a 3.6 GPA, I took part in classes taught by Edward Delaney and Adam Braver with a concentration in fiction and short story writing. Courses that allowed me to further my understanding of fiction writing were Narrative in Writing Short Stories, Use of Style in Fiction, Writers Reading Fiction, and Literary Publishing. Within the Creative Writing curriculum, I took English electives taught by Dr. Meg Case with a focus on analyzing literature. This focus allowed me to understand how a writer thinks and what a reader wants to read. I completed a thesis during my final year — a compilation of short stories and analyses of them.

02

Publishing Course Editorial Assistant

The Literary Publishing class at Roger Williams University gives students the opportunity to create The Mount Hope Literary Magazine — a magazine that includes fiction stories, non-fiction stories, poetry, photography, and graphic stories written by up-and-coming or well-known artists outside of the university. Under the direction of Edward Delaney, I assisted in the finalization of The Mount Hope Literary Magazine 2019 publication and the creation of the 2020 publication. Tasks in the class were divided depending on student interest: my tasks included copyediting and proofreading stories, assisting in the examination of fiction submissions, and creating a PDF document that can be sent to faculty and students in the hope of recruiting students in the future semesters.

Student Newspaper Features Editor & Writer

From the fall of 2016 to the spring of 2017, I managed a team of 10 to 15 student-writers for the Features section of The Hawks' Herald — Roger William's University's Student-run school newspaper. In addition, I created weekly layouts using InDesign for the Features section and edited and proofread student writing for each publication. In the fall of 2016, I completed training at RWU to acquire the title of "reporter" for the magazine. I also wrote articles for the Features and Arts & Culture sections of the paper from spring of 2016 to fall of 2018. This includes her weekly column for three semesters, "This Day in History."

Dance & Theatre Semester Abroad

Roger Williams University is the only institution that provides dance majors with an opportunity to study abroad while still earning credits towards their degree. Fall semester of junior year, dance majors and minors have the opportunity to study in London, England with the Dance and Theater departments. This immersive program provides students with the opportunity to understand what life as a dancer after college is like. I studied at the London Contemporary School of Dance and Pineapple Dance Studios. While learning choreography to perform for Spring Dance Theatre with dance artist Gosia titled "Body of Water," I had the opportunity to perform at Trinity Laban. In addition to dance classes, I traveled around Southern England with an RWU faculty member and a local tour guide to learn about the history and culture of England. This curriculum also included a required amount of dance performances and plays to see, plus a written element each week that required each dancer to write performance reviews, an analysis of each class, and rehearsal notations. In addition, the dancers write, direct, choreograph, and perform in a film that is recorded by a London Filmographer. I aided in the creation of "The Experiment" during my semester in London.
